2007 Mariner Season Kicks Off & M-E/Bev Game Coverage

The Manchester-Essex Mariners have started the season with a 2-3 record.

After opening the season with back to back 5-3 losses to 2006 League Championship Runner Up, Ipswich, the Mariners defeated the Defending Champs, the Rockport Townies 8-3. The Mariners then continued their winning play with a come from behind 7-6 victory against the Beverly Giants.

On Sunday June 10th, the Mariners dropped a 10-6 game to the Beverly Giants at Cooney field in Beverly. Charlie Choate pitched 5 1/3 innings against the strong hitting Giants and recorded the loss, while Jared Knowlton finished up the final 2/3 of an inning to gain his first appearance since last pitching for the former Essex Shipbuilders. The Mariners were in control thru 4 1/2 innings with a 5-2 lead, but with 6 runs in the 5th inning and 2 more insurance runs in the 6th inning the Giants came away with the 10-6 victory to improve their overall record to 2-3.

The Giants were led by home runs from Derek Scialdone & Jeff Barricelli, whil Pat Doyle had a key 2 run double in the 5th inning. Jeff Giannino, Scialdone, Barricelli, Brian Chirco, and Andrew Hobin all collected multiple hit games. Alex Manzi earned the win in relief of Luke Deschamps.

The Mariners were led at the plate by 2-4 hitters: 1b/lf Joe Orlando (3-3, 1bb, 1hbp, 2r), catcher Bryan Lafata (2-4, w/a hr, 2r, 2rbi), and p/dh Charlie Choate (3-4, w/2r, & 3sb). Rory Gentile, Ben Ferreiro, and Ian Buckley also recorded hits, while Ferrerio, Whit Graham and Buckley all had an rbi in the losing cause.

Next game for the Mariners is Tuesday, June 12 when the Mariners host the Topsfield Tories at Memorial Park in Essex at 5:45pm.
